This property is an extension of a 3rd generation sheep and beef farm situated in the heart of the Mangaotaki Valley, 45 minutes south of Waitomo, off State Highway 3. The chalet opened in June 2020 and sits on the side of the Mangaotaki stream where Gandalf's caravan was sited for the filming of the Hobbit in 2011.
It's completely private with only the sounds of the rippling stream, native birds and distant farm dogs working sheep with the farmer. It has a short driveway off the country road that has a good turning area for larger vehicles such as campervans. Please contact us if you wish to plug into the outdoor caravan socket. It also has a flat grassed area for group parking should Ripples be hired for larger gatherings.

Direct river access (walking only). For their safety, we only accept children over the age of 6 and those that don't pose a risk around water.
From hairdryers to ironing boards, we have it all, including a full kitchen. An outdoor BBQ and deck chairs that can be carried to the water's edge if you wish. There is a “two bar†cellphone reception on the Spark and Skinny networks (Vodafone would require a short drive to higher ground). There is enough reception on the front deck to send and receive calls and plan your next day's adventures. Wi-fi is available over rural wireless technology with enough data to download movies to your devices but it's not unlimited, fair usage, please. For a digital detox contact us and we will turn it off for you and you won't know it's there. There is no TV.

There is a full indoor kitchen with all the cooking utensils, coffee machine, large fridge/freezer, microwave and an outdoor BBQ with a fresh salad garden you can help yourselves to. We will supply milk, tea, coffee, oil and handy towels and you will need to bring all other food with you.

The cabin has been purpose built for your comfort. Its rustic luxury interior has many handmade items with original paintings and collectables from various films and ads we have had on the property.

The cabin has been purpose built for your comfort. Its rustic luxury interior has many handmade items with original paintings and collectables from various films and ads we have had on the property.
It features a double outdoor bath with running gas hot water and a romantic double shower with views of limestone cliffs. There is a long window seat with sheep's wool squabs and plenty of space for your bags.
The cabin has three beds. A four poster king bed in the main room and a double-bunk bed with single on top in a separate shut away alcove. The single top bunk is accessed with climbing rocks and requires the nimbleness of a child, they are fun but little hard on the feet. There is a large single squab window seat with an amazing view for you to snuggle up and read a book or for an afternoon nap.

Once you reach your destination, you won't want to leave but for those who crave adventure, it's a perfect home base to explore the many nearby scenic walks, great food options and it's close to the Waitomo Caves tourist attractions.

We are third generation sheep and beef farmers in the Waitomo District near Piopio. I am a designer and love creating beautiful spaces for people to enjoy. We have 3 children, Katie, Corban and Harley and we're all involved in helping people to escape to the country.
