A Lake Tarawera stay like no other and a piece of NZ history. Initially built for a South Otago farm in the 1930s, by Jack himself, this heritage hut is now perched on a hill in Lake Tarawera boasting some stunning views of the surrounding native bush, sheep grazed pasture, and of course the lake and volcano.
This accommodation oozes rustic charm and simple pleasures, from the swing chair under the covered deck looking out over the views to the cedar spa pool filled with spring-fed water.
Heritage Hideaway is split between two huts - the main hut has a super comfy queen bed, a small table and chairs, and a gas fireplace. The second hut comes equipped with a few kitchen essentials including a fridge with a small freezer included, kettle, single cooking hob, plenty of pots, pans, and utensils, and a separate toilet. On the deck, there is an outdoor swing seat and sun loungers, and a BBQ for all cooking. Lastly, at the end of the deck, there is a hot outdoor shower, which is sheltered and private.
A four-minute walk will have you at Stoney Point beach and the public tennis courts - be sure to pack your rackets! Stoney Point is a two-minute walk away and has a play area, beach, and stunning nature walk along the lakefront and great fishing off any number of jetties - bring the catch of the day home to cook for dinner!

We had the most amazing time at the Hut! It is a beautiful secluded spot close to lake Tarawera, ideal for a romantic get away. The hut has everything you need, a comfy bed and the decoration has some wonderful attention to detail. And not to forget the outside hot tub from which you can gaze at the stars at night. Highly recommend this place! - Amber
The hut is the most amazing place to visit! Such a romantic getaway. There is nothing better than sitting on the outdoor swing with a cheese board and a glass of wine. Dave and Angie were amazing and really friendly. We will be regulars each year as we didn’t want to leave so will be looking forward to getting away each year to enjoy the spa, fishing and great company. - Jaimie
Great little spot for a peaceful getaway. Very clean, tidy, private and relaxing. A beautiful view of the lake during the day and a great deck to.star watch at night time.
Highly recommended and wonderful hosts. - Michelle
